Placement of MA Students in Ph.D. Programs

Since 2004, 34 of our MA student graduates have applied to philosophy Ph.D. programs. Of those, 24 have been accepted, and all but five of those received financial support.

A partial list of departments, with the number of applicants accepted, follows. Note that some students were accepted at more than one place.

  • SUNY at Buffalo (joint program with law) (1)
  • University of California, Irvine (1)
  • University of California, Riverside (1)
  • University of Cincinnati (6)
  • University of Colorado (2)
  • University of Connecticut (1)
  • Florida State University (1)
  • London School of Economics (1) (East Asian Studies)
  • University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1)
  • University of Nebraska (1)
  • Princeton (1)
  • Rice University (2)
  • Rutgers University (1)
  • Stanford University (1)
  • Temple (1)
  • Texas A & M University (1)
  • University of Utah (1)

Not all of our MA students intend to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy. Some of them have stayed in Houston and teach now in area community colleges. Others have moved on to careers in law, computer-related fields, or public school teaching.
